Au plan national, l'Union des républicains de progrès, emmenée par Georges Pompidou, arrive en tête avec 42,83 % au premier tour et 46,33 % au second tour, et 244 sièges. La Gauche parlementaire de François Mitterrand (FGDS, PCF, PSU) obtient 194 sièges et le Centre démocrate de Jean Lecanuet 27 sièges.
